“UNITED WE STAND” are the first images of the trailer of the Marvel comic series Secret Empire. Released May 8, 2017 on Marvel Entertainment’s YouTube channel, the series sets the stage for a new, twisted arc in the Marvel Universe; one that will force all the Marvel Heroes to put aside their differences, question their ideations and beliefs, and band together to defeat their enemy to ensure the world is kept from the clutches of Hydra.

Written by Nick Spencer, it is revealed that Captain America, secret identity Steve Rogers, is an agent of Hydra. His memories tainted and reworked by the sentient being Kobik, created by the Cosmic Cube, he now believes himself to be a sleeper agent of Hydra. Turning against S.H.I.E.L.D. and his fellow heroes, he sets forth to ensure Hydra’s influence envelopes and takes over the world with its power. With a number of heroes trapped outside the Earth’s atmosphere by a planetary defense shield and with the intention of destroying anyone who stands in Hydra’s way, the heroes must work together to rise up and take down Hydra before it’s too late.

The trailer itself features art and panels from upcoming issues of the comic, showing Captain America bearing the Hydra logo on his chest, numerous Marvel heroes in battle, and Captain America holding Thor’s Mjolnir above his head – indicative of what may come. The artists and writers explain what has occurred to bring about this story arc and what is expected of the heroes of the Marvel Universe in order to topple Hydra’s influence over Captain America.

My opinion of the series is excited but rather shaken. To see Captain America in the role of the villain must be a distressing sight for any fan of the character, even more so for other heroes in a fight for survival against someone they once considered friend and leader. I am extremely intrigued to read this comic series and may consider purchasing and reading them myself.

The series contains 9 issues that are available NOW at your local comic book store (visit comicshoplocator.com to find your nearest location) or online through the Marvel Digital Comic Shop. Grab yours today and watch the devastating battle unfold as the Marvel Universe is shaken to its core.
