A white haired superhuman mercenary with scars on his face, wielding a sword and magic powers, seeks to defeat monsters and stop the apocalypse? Sounds like a premise for a great TV show in the making. For others, it’s the premise of the CD Projekt created video game series The Witcher; and for the rest of us, it’s just been announced that this fantastic tale is now being turned into its very own Netflix series!

For anyone familiar with the action RPG franchise The Witcher, you already know the world of the “White Wolf”. However, what you may not be aware of is the origins of this famed game series. The story of Geralt of Rivia was first created by Andrej Sapkowski, a Polish fantasy writer, as short stories published in Fantasyka, a Polish sci-fi fantasy magazine, in 1986. The first short story collection “The Witcher” was published in 1992, and has grown into a series of short stories and novels, totalling 10 collections and novels over 25 years. Sapkowski, who drew much inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien’s works, Polish folklore, and fairy tales to create the world of the Witcher, is set to act as creative consultant on the project, which will be produced by Sean Daniel and Jason Brown of the sci-fi program The Expanse; Tomasz Baginski, who worked on the later two Witcher games as an illustrator, is set to direct.

Sapkowski has been notoriously critical of his series being used by CD Projekt, accusing them of disguising the video game’s literary background, also claiming the video games had little to do with helping his novels and collections’ sales in other countries outside of Europe. The Witcher has previously been adapted as a film and a television series under the title “The Hexer”, both of which Sapkowski has been dissatisfied and disparaging of.

By all accounts, Sapkowski is looking forward to the production of this new show, for which no release or premiere date has been announced. No actors have been slated to play roles and no word on whether it will be animated or a live action series. However, fans of the books and/or the video games will await with baited breath to see the world of The Witcher come to life before their eyes!
