Review: Zombillenium Movie Trailer

A new film full of vampires, zombies, devils and monsters galore is set to release sometime this year! Zombillenium, a French-Belgian animated film based on a series of three comic books written by Arthur de Pins, is directed by de Pins and Alexis Ducord; it was released yesterday May 24 at the Cannes Film Festival, being shown in the special screening section, and features voice work from French actors Emmanuel Curtil, Alain Choquet, and Alexis Tomassian.

The film depicts Hector, a human safety inspector, ventures to Zombillenium, a horror themed amusement park, to inspect it when his young daughter expresses interest in attending the park. While inspecting, he inquires too deep and discovers the park is run by monsters, not just actors in makeup. The park manager, a vampire, has no choice but to turn him into a monster and hire him in order to keep the park from going under. As Hector slowly transforms into a devil-like monster, he finds himself working towards keeping the park open in order to fulfill his promise to his daughter.

The film’s trailer presents us with a family-friendly film that combines horror elements and comedy, creating a film that reminisces “Hotel Transylvania” vibes. The film, in my opinion, seems to be incorporating the discussion of death and the bond between parent and child in a kid-friendly format, but also drawing in fantasy elements from the monsters and theme parks in order to make it seem less harsh.

Overall, this film appears very well animated and a labour of love. It would not surprise me if it ended up being a hit at the box offices’ this year, though there has been no official release date for any of the Amercias or Australia, though the English trailer indicates this may soon be a reality. I look forward to more news of this film!
