The Lady jester of the DC Universe, Miss Harley Quinn, is infamous for being the Joker’s lady but is a considerable force to be reckoned with. And so she should be, as she’s slated to appear in the season 3 finale of the Fox television drama Gotham. It had been previously announced that she would be involved in the upcoming fourth season, but will make her official debut in the finale of this current season.

Actor David Mazouz, who portrays a younger alternate version of Bruce Wayne, mentioned in an interview with Movie Pilot recently that “She’s going to be in the finale. Stay tuned.”, teasing the anticipation of fans of the series and the character herself. Mazouz also hinted at the coming catalyst that will drive Bruce Wayne to become Batman.

All Batman fans are familiar with the Maiden of Mischief that is Harley Quinn, or as she was once known as Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel. A talented gymnast and excellent student, she was awarded a scholarship to Gotham City University where she studied to become a psychiatrist. As an intern at Arkham Asylum, Dr. Quinzel was taken by the Joker, seeking to study and treat him. Joker manipulated and seduced her, causing her to fall in love with him and help him escape. This resulted in her medical license being revoked, her to lose her mind, and the be placed in Arkham herself. Eventually, she is able to team up with her love, taking on the persona of “Harley Quinn”, the black and red troublemaking sidekick to the Joker.

Though Harley’s relationship with the Joker is considered abusive and toxic, she herself has developed over the years from a ditzy, love-maddened sidekick to a strong, independent villainess/anti-heroine in her own right. Though she has taken the Joker back on numerous occasions, she herself has broken away from him numerous times, even having an open relationship with infamous villainess Poison Ivy.

Harley Quinn was more of a lesser known character until recent years, where a sudden spike in her popularity has seen her portrayed more frequently in media, as well as new material for cosplayers (myself included). So, her addition to Gotham is an exciting announcement, as Gotham follows an alternate universe setting, so we may have a new plotline for the bisexual, mallet-wielding fanatic we all know and love. We await the season finale to find out.
