Today, many fans are mourning the loss of a television icon; known for his voice appearances in modern television shows such as Family Guy and The Fairly OddParents, among others. However, what he was most well known for was more likely than not, his appearance as Batman in the 1960’s titular show. This week, we lost a cultural star, as Adam West passed away today at the age 88. Adam West, born William West Anderson on September 19, 1928 in Walla Walla, Washington, wanted to be a star at a young age. His mother, a concert pianist and opera singer, was forced to give up her career to care for her children after marrying her husband, a farmer. He decided to follow her lead and work in Hollywood

Prior to making the leap into stardom, he attended Whitman college and graduated with a bachelor’s in literature with a psychology minor, served in the United States army as an announcer for the American Forces Network television, and as a milkman in Hawaii. He had a few television appearances and series before his big break in the television series and film “Batman”; the show ran from 1966-1968 and the movie was released in 1966, both regarded as campy but popular and comical.

Despite being typecast after the show’s run ended, it did not stop him from working, and he took on various roles in film and television, in addition to making guest appearances both in person and voice work. During the final years of his career, he had become well-known as the voice of Quahog’s nutcase mayor Adam West on Family Guy and a cat-obsessed version of himself on The Fairly OddParents. The television appearances gave him a career resurgence and gave him a new light to shine under instead of permanently being considered “just Batman”.

Married three times and having six children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, Adam West passed away surrounded by his wife Marcelle and his family the evening of June 9, 2017 after a short battle with leukemia. On behalf of the entire Lez Geek Out Inc. Team and our CEO Kayla, we extend our condolences to the West family and remember the legacy laid out by this talented man.
