Thinkgeek.com website review.

For anyone who has wanted to upgrade their geek status, from incorporating fandom clothing into their wardrobe to having furniture inspired by their favourite film/tv show/video game, your ultimate destination when not at a con is the Internet. However, with so many website and so many option, few people know where to start, what’s reputable, and what’s well priced. Today, we will take a look through thinkgeek.com, a website full of geeky goodies for nearly every fan’s desires!

For my review, I will be using four types of criteria: website layout and style, content selection/sizing/availability/reliability, pricing/shipping, and personal experience, as I have previously purchased from this website. Please note this review is not sponsored or affiliated with thinkgeek.com, this is simply a personal review and promotion of the website for those who may be in search of products listed on this site.

Website: thinkgeek.com is laid out in a very user friendly format, with organized tabs that drop down to reveal not only the categories of items they have, but another allows you to “Shop by Interest”, which has sub-categories for movies, tv, video games, general topic interests (cats, space, science, etc.), and gifts for certain people. I find the use of the “Monkey” in the theme funny and gives the company an easygoing, whimsical feeling.

Content Selection: I have been using thinkgeek.com since I was 18, when I got my first job and when I first dove headfirst into full geek mode. Coming from myself as a long time purchaser, their website is both reputable and expansive. While some of the newer or lesser known fandoms (e.g. Hellboy, Supernatural, Witcher, etc.) may have very little or no items listed on the site, many of the older or well-known fandoms (e.g. Star Wars, Star Trek, Zelda, Pokemon, etc.) have an expansive collection of items to choose from.

Sizing: Sizing is the standard S-XL on most items, though you may be able to find a few that are into the plus sizing if you search for them. The few shoe options on the website tend to come in women’s sizes 5-11 or S-XL, though there are few to no men’s shoe options.’

Availability: The website has lots of products to chose from, but can have limited stock, especially on popular items. If something is out of stock, you have the option to add it to your wish list, but not to be emailed when it is back in stock. They sometimes provide an estimated date of availability, if possible.

Reliability: I have purchased a handful of items from thinkgeek.com in the past. Three I distinctly recall include a light purple shirt with the “Star Wars” logo on the chest, a black Firefly shirt with the phrase “Shiny” on the chest, and a tentacle wrap earring (all no longer available). The Star Wars shirt I ordered too small, so it was ill fitting but was well-made and last me a while; the Shiny shirt was super cute and comfortable, but the material pilled and became worn with wear, but still lasted a solid six months before I decommissioned it from my wardrobe; the tentacle wrap earring did not fit my ear shape, as it did not curve hard enough to hold against my head, so I did not get much use from it. But, overall, I did like and enjoy the items I purchased at the time.

Pricing: thinkgeek.com is an American company and website, thus if you live here in Canada, the pricing is going to be more expensive after conversion. All pricing and shipping prices are listed in USD and there is no currency conversion option on the website, so you may have to convert it to ensure you don’t overspend if you are keeping to a budget. Some items are very affordable but others, such as jewellery, official merchandise, and electronics or furniture are rather expensive.

Shipping: This is only free when domestic, meaning unless there’s a deal going on, you’ll have to pay if you live outside of the US. Shipping has three levels, with the lowest standard shipping being $12.95 for 4-15 business days, followed by expedited shipping at $19.95 for 3-18 business days, and the highest being express shipping at $29.95 for 1-2 business days.

Personal Experience: My experience shopping on thinkgeek.com has been positive so far, though I dislike the high shipping prices and the lack of a USD to other currency converter, I think the large selection of products and the number of available interests and topics to chose from are awesome.

Overall, thinkgeek.com is a great place to find amazing, unique geek culture items for every budget type. Just be wary of the conversion rate, shipping costs, and sizing if those are things that you struggle with or need to take into consideration. Don’t forget to check out the website to see everything they have in store!
