SYFY’s “Krypton” Teaser Trailer Review

One of DC Comic’s earliest creations was the character Superman. Born Kal-El on the planet Krypton, his parents sent him to Earth in a space ship to save his life from their planet’s impending destruction. Landing on Earth, he is found and adopted by a childless couple, Jonathan and Martha, and renamed Clark. Graced with superhuman and extraordinary abilities by his species, and instilled with good morals and beliefs by his parents, Clark becomes Superman in his adult years, concealing his powers and vowing to protect the Earth and its inhabitants.

Many fans of Superman are aware of his planet and its destruction, but how much do we really know of its origins and history? Perhaps the answer will lie within an upcoming television series picked up by SYFY, aptly titled “Krypton”. The series is not set to premiere until sometime in 2018, but two teaser trailers have been released, most recently on July 20.

“Krypton” will center around Superman’s grandfather, Seg-El (portrayed by Cameron Cuffe), in his younger years. The show’s plot describes that House El has been ostracized and shamed for an unrevealed reason, leading Seg-El to fight to restore his family’s honour, as well as saving his planet from forthcoming chaos. Also featured will be Lyta Zod (portrayed by Georgina Campbell), a Kryptonian cadet and warrior who is in a forbidden relationship with Seg-El, and Daron-Vex (portrayed by Elliot Cowan), the chief magistrate of Kandor, Krypton’s capital. Additionally, Seg-El’s father, Ter-El, and grandfather, Val-El (portrayed by Ian McElhinney) will appear; also appearing will be heroes and villains such as Doomsday, Hawkgirl, Adam Strange, and Braniac.

The teaser trailer lasts 20 seconds and reveals little, but has some powerful images to excite us for the forthcoming show. Images of Krypton are intercut with a few select scenes featuring the characters of the show in action, a close up of the Superman “S” key that has been seen in Superman films, and a final scene of (presumably) Seg-El’s hand being cut and blood dripped over the “S” logo that Superman bears, before it becomes red and yellow and the key is lit up, the voiceover stating “The blood of House El will always bind us together.” The title of the show is laid over the planet, which is situated in front of a sun, with the release date of 2018 just above the SYFY logo.

The trailer does exactly what it’s job intends it to do – tease us. We can only wait in anticipation to see what future trailers and the first episode of this show will hold. Though there may be doubts about whether this show has lasting power, as we know what happens in the future of the House El line, but perhaps going further back in history can provide us with a new perspective on Superman.
