Every year, hundreds of films are released in theatres and no matter how much censoring or editing is done, someone will have a complaint. Whether it be about violence, profanity, drug and alcohol use, sexual content, or references to any of the above and more, there will always be one person who will take issue.

This year, the British Board of Film Classification conducted and released their 2016 annual report of film complaints. Coming in at number 3 was “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”, which had 20 complaints against it, mostly pertaining to the scary scenes in it being too mature for a 12A rating. The second most complained about film of 2016 was “Suicide Squad” with 30, primarily due to it’s 15 and up rating, which prevented younger children and adolescents from viewing it. But the number 1 most complained about film of 2016 was “Deadpool”.
“Deadpool” had a total of 51 complaints launched against it; the complaints ranged from the amount of violence in the film to the sexual references, innuendos, and strong language littered throughout. The report that reviewed the film defended the 15 certificate given to it, meaning anyone over the age of 15 could view the film; the report stated that though there was a large amount of violence and gore, it usually occurred during the fast-pace fight sequences that did not focus on details. Also stated was the fact that though a lot of strong language and sexual content were present, there is no cutoff point for this film rating classification, therefore it is acceptable.
While most would argue that people complaining about a film’s rating and content is redundant and facetious, some people do not realize what a film’s content may contain until they view it and it is unsettling. This is why people should take a look at reviews and the film’s rating prior to viewing it, as to avoid any future issues or offense.
