Marvel has been announcing tons of new comics, television shows, and movies left, right and center. With so many creations coming out, it’s hard to keep up with all the new content but many will find something to get excited about one of the many planned projects. One of the latest announcements to come from Marvel is the early release date for a new ABC-produced Hulu series titled “Runaways”.

The tv series is based off of the comic book series of the same name, which debuted in 2003. The Runaways features a group of six kids, Alex Wilder, Nico Minoru, Molly Hayes, Karolina Dean, and Gertrude Yorkes; who are the children of a group of underground criminal group known as “The Pride”, a supervillain which consists of mad scientists, dark wizards, mob bosses, mutants, and aliens. “The Pride” was originally formed to recreate a serene utopia the Earth had once been under the rule of the Gibborim, three mythical giants millions of years old. They are required to perform a “rite of Blood” ritual, in which they sacrifice an innocent young girl to these gods once a year. The Runaways form after witnessing one of these such rituals, stealing resources from their parents and working to free their parents from the hold of the mystics.
The original six members of the Runaways are quite diverse and different from one another; Alex Wilder is an African-American genius, and the first de facto leader of the group, Nico Minoru (Sister Grimm) is a Japanese-American witch, who possesses the Staff of One and serves as the de facto leader after Alex’s departure; Karolina Dean is a Majesdanian alien, who possesses flight and solar manipulation abilities and identifies as a lesbian; Molly Hayes is the daughter of telepathic mutants, whose powers are that of super strength and invulnerability, and she is the youngest of the group; Gertrude “Gert” Yorkes (Arsenic) is an ethnic Jewish daughter of time-travellers, who has a telepathic bond with a genetically engineered dinorsaur she calls “Old Lace” and is an intelligent but cynical person; and Chase Stein (Talkback) is the son of mad scientists and thus comes into possession of energy producing gaunlets and boots, but also possesses a link to Old Lace.
The series will star Rhenzy Feliz as Alex Wilder, Lyrica Okano as Nico Minoru, Virginia Gardner as Karolina Dean, Ariela Barer as Gert Yorkes, Gregg Sulkin as Chase Stein, and Allegra Acosta as Molly Hernandez (slight changes from comics). With such a diverse cast and compelling story arc, it can be assumed that this show will be a huge hit amongst those who often seek out shows and films with diversity to identify with. Marvel also announced that YA novelist Rainbow Rowell and artist Kris Anka will be reviving the comic series additionally this fall. The series is set to premiere on November 21 of this year, months earlier than the original projected premiere of sometime in 2018. Fingers crossed it will be worth the early release date!
